Angelic Old Fashioned

The Inspiration

I have been making a split base bourbon and rye old fashioned for years. Bourbon alone can sometimes be too sweet and rye alone can sometimes be too spice / bitter forward. This depends largely on which spirit you use, but I finally decided to take one of my favorites ryes, one that I would normally consider a “sipper” and pair it with the same brand of bourbon. Angel’s Envy Rye, in this case, which has notes of raisin, dried fruit, curry, and toasted spices, is the magic that makes this old fashioned truly memorable… Don’t believe me?

Check out our old fashioned toast off where it was voted a very close second in a blind tasting of eight different old fashioned recipes.

Ingredients

1 ounce of Angel’s Envy Rye (This specific rye makes the drink)
1 ounce of Angel’s Envy Bourbon
1 teaspoon of rich demerara syrup (2:1 ratio)
2 dashes of angostura bitters
1 dash or orange bitters
1 dash pimento bitters (if you can’t find, use one extra dash of angostura to make a similarly pleasing variation)
Optional Garnish: orange peel

How to Prepare

Add bitters, rich demerara syrup, bourbon and rye into a glass with ice and stir for a minimum of 30 seconds
Strain and pour over a large ice cube in an old fashioned glass
If using the orange peel garnish, express over top, wipe the rim, and place it anywhere in the glass

Cheers!
